My friend asked me to create a piece for someone. The recipient is from Portland, so I decided to do the state of Oregon. Originally I was thinking maybe just doing a heart over Portland but I decided I wanted to do something a little more interesting. I settled on doing a mandala centered on Portland with a background of other quilled pieces. I think it turned out pretty well.
One thing that I tried on this creation was creating it on a piece of wax paper before glueing everything down. I found this really helpful, especially since I like to change my mind a lot. At one point I thought I would add another mandala in the bottom right corner and this method easily let me switch in and out pieces.
